TIKTOK'S chief executive Kevin Mayer has quit after just two months on the job.
But who is Kevin Mayer, and why has he resigned?
Who is TikTok boss Kevin Mayer?
Kevin Mayer, 58, is an American businessman and was the CEO of TikTok.
He has degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, San Diego State University, and also received an MBA from Harvard Business School.
He started working at The Walt Disney Company in 1993, where he later became chairman in March 2018.
Kevin spent 15 years working for the company, orchestrating the acquisition of Pixar, Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, and 21st Century Fox.
In the past, he also served as the CEO of Playboy.com.
Mr Mayer joined TikTok in June after leaving his role as Disney's head of streaming services.
He was also COO of Chinese internet technology company ByteDance Ltd.
Kevin Mayer was brought into TikTok to help give the Chinese-owned app an American image.
It was thought that the former Disney man would be able to negotiate with a tough-on-China Trump administration – better than perhaps a Chinese chief executive amid the growing safety concerns.
Why has he resigned as CEO?
The TikTok chief resigned on August 26, 2020 ahead of an impending ban by US President Donald Trump.
The app has been accused of being a threat to US national security – and Mayer has now quit.
TikTok was given 90 days to be sold to an American firm or face a ban in the US.
Mr Mayer wrote to employees: "In recent weeks, as the political environment has sharply changed, I have done significant reflection on what the corporate structural changes will require, and what it means for the global role I signed up for.
"Against this backdrop, and as we expect to reach a resolution very soon, it is with a heavy heart that I wanted to let you all know that I have decided to leave the company."
How much did he earn as TikTok CEO?
It was estimated that Kevin Mayer had a net worth of around $15 million before he took up the job as CEO of TikTok.
It's unclear how much Mr Mayer earned while working as TikTok's CEO for just two months.
Forbes first declared Zhang Timing, the founder of TikTok, a billionaire in March 2018, estimating that Zhang was worth $4 billion.
The magazine now estimates his net worth at $16.2 billion.
