Vladimir Putin has made his most explicit threat yet to deploy Russia’s nuclear arsenal, saying the United States had set the “precedent” for using nuclear weapons when it bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the closing stages of the Second World War.

In a speech delivered on Russian TV today, the Russian leader announced that he would be annexing four Ukrainian regions into Russian territory following this week’s “referendums” – which have been internationally condemned as sham votes.

He said that if any countries tried to reclaim those provinces Russia would use 'all the power and all the means' at its disposal to defend them.

Turning to the sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which had already been closed indefinitely after a number of leaks were allegedly found, he blamed the destruction on “terror attacks” from “Anglo Saxons”.

Before the invasion of Ukraine, US President Joe Biden had warned that he would 'put an end' to the Nord Stream pipelines in the event of a Russian invasion.

"If Russia invades,” he told a press conference in February, “then there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it."

A reporter asked him: "But how will you do that, exactly, since…the project is in Germany's control?”

Biden replied: "I promise you, we will be able to do that."

Today, Putin urged president Zelenskyy to stand his troops down, saying Ukraine should "immediately stop firing and return to negotiations".

Putin also attacked western moral values, saying that European and American people were “satanic” and were against what he called “moral norms”.

Putin asked the audience listening in the Kremlin if they they were happy for “children to be offered sex-change operations,” a practise which he implied was an everyday occurrence in the West.

At the end of his speech, Putin and the Russian-backed leaders of the so-called autonomous regions stood as audience in the Kremlin’s grand hall chanted "Russia! Russia! Russia!".
