Law enforcement officers shot and killed an armed man Saturday morning in Loma after he allegedly trespassed on his neighbor’s property, the Grand Junction Police Department said in a news release.
Shortly after 10 a.m., Mesa County sheriff’s deputies and Fruita police officers responded to a trespass in progress in the 1200 Block of M ¾ Road in Loma. The caller said her neighbor was on her property and carrying a gun, authorities said.
“The suspect was armed with a firearm and was not compliant with directions from law enforcement,” Grand Junction police said. “Ultimately, the suspect was shot by law enforcement.”
It is unclear how many officers fired their weapons or if the suspect fired on law enforcement.
The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital, where he later died. No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.
The shooting will be investigated by the 21st Judicial District. The officers involved will be placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
The incident marks the 43rd time this year that law enforcement injured or killed someone in Colorado, and the second involving the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and Fruita police.
