Kate Middleton had to make urgent alterations to her engagement ring to avoid a 'wedding nightmare' before she tied the knot with Prince William, it's been said.

Her sparkling sapphire engagement ring, dubbed as one of the most famous pieces of jewellery, was previously owned and worn by the late Princess Diana.

The Duchess of Cambridge was presented with the gorgeous ring in 2010 when William asked her to marry him, and she's worn it ever since.

The ring features a 12-carat oval blue sapphire surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds.

However, it was reported shortly before her wedding in April 2011, the Duchess had to have the piece altered as she found the bad was too big.

It is believed the ring was sent to royal jewellers G. Collins and Sons, who made a tweak as it was "turning on her finger."

Although, instead of resizing the precious band, small platinum beads are said to have been attached inside the bottom of the ring to ensure a snug fit.

At the time, a source told The Sun that Kate "adores" the ring, but found it was too big for her.

They claimed: "A bride's worst nightmare is looking down and seeing her ring has fallen off.

"One can only imagine how this is magnified when you are marrying the future King of England."

Kate now wears the iconic ring alongside her wedding band, which is made from Welsh gold.

According to a documentary, the Duchess almost nearly never received her late mother-in-law's former engagement ring.

It's believed it previously belonged to Prince Harry after he and Prince William chose pieces from her belongings following her death.

Diana's former butler, Paul Burrell, said during the programme The Diana Story, the Duke of Sussex "selflessly" gave up the ring so brother William could propose to Kate Middleton when he popped the question.

He claimed after Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, Prince Charles allowed his two sons to select pieces from her jewellery collection to keep.

It's believed the iconic sapphire ring went to Harry and William chose a gold Cartier watch.

However, in the programme, Burrell said shortly before William got down on one knee for Kate in 2010, Harry offered him the chance to give his wife-to-be their mother's own ring.
