The Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly struck a deal with Buckingham Palace which saw them not pay any further rent on Frogmore Cottage.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle negotiated an agreement which saw the pair not pay any rent on their five-bedroom Windsor-estate mansion after they paid back the £2.4million of taxpayer money used for refurbishments, according to The Mail on Sunday.
Despite quitting life as working royals and relocating to Canada before eventually settling in California, Harry and Meghan continued to keep Frogmore Cottage as their official UK residence.

It was reportedly expected the spare and his wife would pay a commercial rate for the property.
However, Buckingham Palace told The Mail on Sunday that Harry and Meghan paid just five months' rent before paying back the £2.4m in an agreement which wiped out "future financial obligations".
According to the agreement, the renovations increased the value of the property, so the hefty lump sum was taken as "rent in lieu".
It is estimated Frogmore Cottage costs between £150,000 and £230,000 to rent a year, so the deal potentially saves Harry and Meghan £690,000 from when they stepped back from royal duties in 2020.
A Palace spokesperson told The Mail on Sunday: "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a contribution of £2.4m to the Sovereign Grant which covered the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage. They have fulfilled their financial obligations in relation to the property.
"In line with usual practice for the Sovereign Grant report, the accounting treatment was scrutinised and signed off by the National Audit Office and the Treasury. As with any such agreement between landlord and tenant, further details regarding the Sussexes' tenancy arrangements would be a private matter."
The Daily Star reached out to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's representatives for comment.
