US President Donald Trump is currently campaigning for the election this year, as he makes increasing public appearances across the US. One such appearance was in the city of Kenosha, a staging ground for protests against the shooting of Jacob Blake. His appearance prompted an old clip of the President to resurface in which he claims protesters weaponised cans of soup.

Why did Donald Trump lash out at soup?

The viral clip now circulating the web was first recorded months ago not long after the protests broke out.

Back on July 31, he hosted a White House meeting with the National Association of Police Organisations Leadership.

While there, he briefly riffed about protest methods and suggested demonstrators had weaponised them.

Speaking to the NAPO, he said canned goods emerged as one of several preferred projectiles, even over bricks.

Mr Trump said: “In cities across the nation, we’ve also seen police officers assaulted with bricks, rocks, bats, Molotov cocktails, frozen bottles of water.

“Somebody said last night, one of the protesters — I saw it — he said, ‘It’s only water. How can water hurt you?’

“Yeah, they don’t say it’s frozen, in a bottle the size of a football.”

“And they throw it at the police. It’s unbelievable. ‘It’s water.’

“And then they have cans of soup. Soup. And they throw the cans of soup.

“That’s better than a brick because you can’t throw a brick; it’s too heavy. But a can of soup, you can really put some power into that, right?”

The President added protesters could easily conceal the projectiles, and that the media ignored them.

He continued: “And then, when they get caught, they say, ‘No, this is soup for my family.’

“They’re so innocent. ‘This is soup for my family.’ It’s incredible. And you have people coming over with bags of soup — big bags of soup.

“And they lay it on the ground, and the anarchists take it and they start throwing it at our cops, at our police.

“And if it hits you, that’s worse than a brick because that’s got force. It’s the perfect size. It’s, like, made perfect.”

Although the clip is relatively old, Twitter users have latched on to it.

People have taken to the platform saying they “can’t stop” laughing at the video.

One user said: “Anyone else have an arsenal of soup in their pantry, or is it just me?”

Another added: “Ugh. I was up late finishing a project & woke up feeling like I got hit with a bag of soup.”
