Covid ‘genetically engineered in Wuhan lab with US funding’ claims whistleblower

A scientist who worked closely with a lab in Wuhan claims the facility was the source of Covid-19, which was "genetically engineered" with US funding.

The explosive revelations from Dr Andrew Huff, former vice president of EcoHealth Alliance, back up what some experts have believed all along – the deadly virus leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Dr Huff, giving first look of his upcoming book The Truth About Wuhan to The Sun, said that the alleged cover up constitutes the "biggest US intelligence failure since 9/11".

"EcoHealth Alliance and foreign laboratories did not have the adequate control measures in place for ensuring proper biosafety, biosecurity, and risk management, ultimately resulting in the lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology," he said.

EcoHealth Alliance is a US-based non-governmental organisation that specialises in researching pandemics and infectious diseases.

A government source told the Mail on Sunday in June that even World Health Organisation chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus thinks that the virus escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

The lab itself, and the Chinese government, deny this allegation vehemently.

Many of the early cases of Covid were associated with a wet market in Wuhan, but the WHO said it couldn't be conclusively said the seafood site was the epicentre because there were plenty of cases elsewhere around the time Covid broke out initially.

Severla former intelligence chiefs and diplomats have already clamed that Covid was leaked from a Wuhan lab in the "cover up of the century".

Dr Huff, who worked at EcoHealth Alliance from 2014 to 2016, said the US Government funded gain-of-function research in the Wuhan lab before a leak occurred due to lax biosecurity.

Gain-of-function research is medical research that genetically alters an organism in a way that may enhance the biological functions.

The US National Institutes of Health had funded decade-long research, by EcoHealth Alliance, into coronaviruses in bats.

The lab also allegedly worked closely with The United States Agency for International Development, an independent agency of the US federal government primarily concerned with giving aid and assisting with aid development.

EcoHealth Alliance "developed close working ties with the Wuhan lab," The Sun reported. Dr Huff served as vice president from 2015 until the end of his tenure.

Huff said that EcoHealth Alliance taught the "best existing methods to engineer bat coronaviruses to attack other species" to the Wuhan lab.

"China knew from day one that this was a genetically engineered agent. The US government is to blame for the transfer of dangerous biotechnology to the Chinese," he said.

Speaking to The Sun Online, Dr Huff added: "I was terrified by what I saw. We were just handing them bioweapon technology."

He added that all of the US funding and assistance was a veiled "giant intelligence operation" to asses the bioweapon capabilities of foreign labs.
