Macy the dog was out walking on her leash with Lily Kwan around the neighbourhood of Scarborough, Toronto, Canada, when the incident happened on Tuesday, July 20. Footage captured on a home security device shows the tiny pup coming face-to-face with the coyote in the middle of a road.

As Lily runs away calling for help, the pooch is seen being chased by the larger wild animal before it picks up Macy with its teeth.

The upsetting video then shows the dog being violently shaken across the grass before the coyote runs away, with Macy limping behind.

Speaking to News 6, Lily’s mother Dorothy said: “My dog would do anything for our family, so I’m actually not surprised that she did that.

“I would never guess that a coyote, you know, would come out during the day and especially with someone screaming and yelling it still was not fazed.

“It just kept coming after her and our dog, you know, despite all the yelling. It was quite aggressive.”

“She’s our little hero.” Ms Kwan added.

Speaking about her dog’s heroic actions, Lily told ABC7: “She’s a super brave dog; I love her so much, and I just thought this tiny dog could protect this huge human being, trying to fight off this huge coyote.”

The young canine suffered injuries to her leg and torso and several puncture wounds that required surgery and a stay in ICU to treat the wounds.

To help pay for the veterinary bills costing $10,000, Dorothy and Lily have set up a GoFundMe page.

Dorothy’s appeal reads: “My heart is breaking for both my little one and our dog whom we rescued five years ago. I’m a single mom of two and my children and our dog mean everything to me. They are my life.”

Coyote’s are a North American native canine species that closely resemble a wolf, often seen living in both natural and urban areas, eating a mix of small wildlife and garbage.

Attacks on humans by coyotes are rare, according to the Humane Society of the United States, with more people being killed by flying Champagne corks each year.
