Anderson previously said of the premise of The Fall: “You get to see a serial killer at work.”
Cubitt always envisioned the story of Spector to be a trilogy as he and Stella were locked in a cat-and-mouse game.
Reflecting on the final series of The Fall, she said: “People need to tune in to season three because there was such an intense cliff-hanger at the end of season two.”
She continued: “What ends up on the page is so much more interesting and unlikely and unsettling and out of leftfield than pretty much anything I could ever have come up with.”
Dornan added: “Season three particularly, we get a big insight into the mind of Spector.”
The Fall won critical acclaim for its joint leads Anderson and Dornan as well as Cubitt for creating a compelling piece of television.
Among the award nominations was a BAFTA, a slew of National Television Awards and the Golden Nymph Award while the show won gongs from the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards and also the Irish Film and Television Awards,
The show attracted criticism from some quarters when it first aired for glamorising serial killers with the manner in which Spector positioned his victims’ bodies in a sexually provocative manner.

However, Cubitt responded to the backlash, branding it “insulting” and calling it an “absurd comment”.
Although season three was the last one for Dornan, creator Cubitt expressed a desire to follow Gibson’s story further.
Cubitt previously told Digital Spy in 2016: “I don’t think I’m giving much away in saying it’s Jamie’s last season.”
He added “But that’s not to say that we wouldn’t do more of The Fall.”
On the show’s future he teased: “I do have some thoughts.”
However, fans of the show may be waiting some time before they see the return of Stella.
Cubitt said: “But I’m quite keen on doing other things as well, so it’s not going to be straight away.”
The show ended with a sombre-looking Stella contemplating her next move as she mulled the future over a large glass of red wine.
Since The Fall, Cubitt reunited with actor Dornan on the mini-series Death and Nightingales which came out in 2019.
