Outlander season six will air on Starz when it is released and viewers are looking forward to seeing the leading couple return. Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and love interest Claire (Caitriona Balfe) will continue their romance in the latest outing. As all mortal characters do, they will both meet their demise at some stage – but when doe Jamie die?

When does Jamie Fraser die in Outlander?

One particular episode in season five has led fans to question what happens to Jamie in the upcoming instalment.

He left for the battle against the Regulators and shared an emotional parting message with his wife.

Jamie said there would come a day when they will part, but it would not be that day.

Previously, Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) came across an obituary and tried to warn Jamie.

The document says: “It is with grief that the news is received of the death by fire of JAMES MACKENZIE FRASER and his wife in a conflagration that destroyed the home and the settlement of Fraser’s Ridge.”

The date on the document was January 21, but only part of the year was visible – 177.

With this in mind, it seems Jamie could die any time between 1770 and 1779.

In the novels by Diana Gabaldon, the obituary is touched on in more detail and suggests the couple died in 1776.

Fans will be interested to see whether season six follows the same direction as the source material.

They are already aware their Jamie’s ghost travels to the future to meet Claire, so his death is a certainty.

In a recent interview, Gabaldon hinted Jamie died on the battlefield of Culloden.

The Jamie Fraser star Heughan told Gold Derby: “I mean, to see Jamie at the end, he chose to come back.

“He chose to come back for Claire because he loves her but it’s probably the second time that Jamie has come this close to death.

“He’s probably taken his last breath and Culloden was the other one.”

So he too suggested Jamie will meet his demise at this battle.

They are still waiting to find out how Jamie dies in the books, with Go Tell the Bees That I am Gone due to be released in November.

At the end of the last novel, Jamie was still alive, however, at 58-years-old he is definitely not at the peak of health.

Some viewers have suggested Jamie’s death could come at the end of the sixth season, but Gabaldon confirmed this would not be the case.

This is good news for fans as it means heart-throb Heughan will be around for the foreseeable future.

The release date for season six is yet to be announced, but there is already a lot of excitement around the new series.

Fans have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts on Jamie’s storyline so far, with one saying: “Can there be at least one episode where Jamie doesn’t almost die please?! I’m stressed. #Outlander” [Sic]

Another said: “Oh God I can’t take this DON’T DIE JAMIE. Need more tissues.”

A third added: “All I’m sayin is if Jamie & Claire don’t die together then I’m suing everyone involved w/ Outlander.” [Sic]

When Jamie does finally meet his demise, fans can only hope it is in the arms of his beloved Claire.

Outlander season 6 is in the making for Starz.
