Morbius: Sony release trailer starring Jared Leto
Morbius is a story of a ‘living vampire,’ when Dr Michael Morbius tries a dangerous cure to help heal him of a rare blood disease. He is an interesting character as he is both villainous, due to his vampiric tendencies, but also a person who wants to do good. His and Venom’s story are similar in various ways – but do these franchises link up?
We know the Sony and Marvel collaboration movies are meant to join up in some way, almost like the MCU.
However, given the new Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, is fully immersed in the MCU, unlike Venom, it may be difficult to work out how these two universes could co-exist.
Earlier this year, Jared Leto, star of Morbius, confirmed there would be more than just his film, calling it an “expanding universe”.
Speaking in December on Sony’s YouTube channel, Jared said: “I think it’s going to be a fun one and I can’t wait for you guys to see it.

“It’s an exciting role and an expanding universe. There’s a lot for all of us to look forward to.”
This makes it pretty plain there will be a link between these films, but how could that be?
It is pretty hard to tell exactly how these movies will be intertwined, but we have been given some clues.
The first is in the Morbius trailer, which ended with the surprise appearance of Adrian Toomes.
Adrian Toomes, also known as Vulture, was played by Michael Keaton in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and was the main villain against the friendly neighbourhood superhero.
They come together in a passing moment, where both look as though their villainy has been caught out once again.
This could, of course, not necessarily mean the same Adrian is coming between the two universes, as there is precedent for there to be the same actor playing different versions of the same person in different universes.
At the end of the latest Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Far From Home, J.K. Simmons appears as a loud-mouthed journalist J. Jonah Jameson who works as a YouTube gossip columnist, outing Spider-Man’s true identity.
However, in the previous and solely Sony Spider-Man world, where Tobey Maguire took on the title role, J.K. Simmons also played a character with this name, but he was a loud-mouthed editor of the Daily Bugle.
While this could be the same person, but having moved through time, it could be this is an example of the MCU multiverse which is emerging, where people can play multiple versions of themselves across different films.
Therefore, while Adrian may have turned up and had a word with Morbius, it may not be what we think.
Another clue in the same trailer comes when Morbius walks past a graffiti image of Spider-Man on a wall, showing there is definitely a Spider-Man in his universe.
However, one of the biggest clues of the list came with a leaked set moment from Morbius, which was revealed earlier this year.
The set reveal showed an advert from the Daily Bugle, which suggested Cletus Kasady was on the loose and Spider-Man was missing.
If this is the case, this could lead into the new Venom movie, where Cletus Kasady (played by Woody Harrelson) is the main villain, while it links to the finale of Spider-Man: Far From Home when his identity was revealed, meaning he could have gone into hiding.
However, these suggestions are merely conjecture, and it could be the brains behind Sony and the MCU are throwing some red herrings to put fans off the scent.
Whatever is the truth, it does seem likely the films are connected, but the intricacies of how are yet to be seen.
Morbius is in cinemas on March 19, 2021
