Mindhunter boss finally reveals why true crime hit won't return to Netflix for season 3 despite ratings success

MINDHUNTER'S boss has finally revealed why the true crime hit won't return to Netflix for season 3 despite ratings success.

The series follows two FBI agents who spearhead profiling techniques in the late 1970s and early 1980s, combining real-life criminals like Charles Manson with the narrative.

The show stars Holt McCallany and Jonathan Groff as the FBI agents while David Fincher acts as the executive producer and occasional director.

The show has proved a hit with viewers since the first series launched in October 2017, but David has revealed that the show could be over after just two seasons.

Speaking to Vulture, David said: "We had done the first season of Mindhunter without a showrunner, with me pinch-hitting on a week-by-week basis.

"We started getting scripts for the second season, and I ended up looking at what was written and deciding I didn't like any of it.

"So we tossed it and started over. But it's a 90-hour work week. It absorbs everything in your life.

"When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, 'I don't know if I have it in me right now to break season three.' […] Mindhunter was a lot for me."

Asked to clarify if that meant the show was over for good, David replied: "I think probably. Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show.

"I honestly don't think we're going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs."

Fans of the show immediately took to social media to discuss the fact the show is unlikely to return, with one joking: "on my way to sell my kidney so David Fincher can continue to shoot #mindhunter."

Another tweeted: "It's sad that Mindhunter It's going to be canceled. It was one of the greatest shows on Netflix."

A third added: "Out of all the things I'd miss about #Mindhunter , letting go of Wendy Carr will be little extra hard. True, the show was too good to be true. Deep down, I still hope they pick it up again sooner or later."

Mindhunter seasons one and two are available on Netflix.
