Fans of the series on BBC One were thrilled to hear it was coming back to screens after almost four years. The last series, which was a Christmas special, was aired back in 2016. The show is known for its stunning landscapes and here are the main filming locations.
Where is Last Tango in Halifax set?
The modern-day series follows the story of two generations of the same family, who are from very different backgrounds.
Screenwriter Sally Wainwright adapted the story of her mother’s second marriage for the BBC One programme.
Anne Reid (Coronation Street, Dinnerladies, The Mother) plays Celia and Derek Jacobi (I, Claudius, The Tenth Man, Frasier) plays Alan – the couple, who were childhood sweethearts, end up getting married as pensioners after discovering each other through Facebook.
The series also follows their children – Alan’s daughter Gillian (played by Nicola Walker) and Anne’s daughter Caroline (Sarah Lancashire).
Gillian lives and works on a farm whereas her sister-in-law is the headteacher at a school and comes from a well-to-do background.
Screenwriter Sally Wainwright told the media, including Express.co.uk, she was excited to be back.
She said: “Things like this can slowly tick away in your brain, they never go away. It’s a joy, it’s therapy.”

Where is Last Tango in Halifax filmed?
As the name suggests, a lot of the filming for the series so far has taken place on location in Halifax – a town in West Yorkshire.
The town is steeped in history and is known for the famous Halifax bank headquarters.
Beautiful buildings make up part of the landscape including the town hall and plenty of historic churches.
Yorkshire is also known for its green rolling hills and open spaces, which feature prominently in the series.
There are some scenes which are not filmed in Halifax, including those which take place on Gillian’s stunning farm.
Fans have pinpointed the location as Knowl Farm in Rochdale, although in the series it is referred to under a different name.
Previous series have included shots from St John’s Road in Altrincham which was used to represent scenes set in Harrogate, including those of Caroline’s house.
In the new series Celia and Alan have just bought a bungalow with paronramic views across the Calder Valley – the perfect retirement spot.
Except Alan has no plans on retiring yet and applies for a job at the local supermarket.
The Upper Calder Valley is in West Yorkshire, on the outskirts of Halifax, and includes the River Calder.
The area has also been a popular setting for Wainwright’s other big TV series Happy Valley, which Sarah Lancashire also stars in.
A number of scenes have also been shot in Ripponden in Calderdale, a village near Halifax.
The hills and valleys of Calderdale form part of the picturesque backdrop throughout the series.
- Gentleman Jack: What major change did writer Sally Wainwright make?
Faith Penhale, executive producer for Lookout Point, said it was a great experience filming again.
She said: “It’s been an absolute pleasure to bring the Tango team back together and watch them work their magic.
“Sally’s scripts are as brilliant as ever – warm and funny and very real – and our exceptional cast make it look easy.
“I can’t wait to give the fans four more episodes of this very special drama which they rightly love so much.”
Last Tango in Halifax season 5 airs on BBC One tonight, February 23, at 9pm
