Ed Sheeran earned £70million last year despite taking a break from music

HE’LL go down as a music legend . . . and Ed Sheeran has the pay to show for it.

Ed made an incredible £70.4milllion last year through his touring firm.

And that’s not including his song recording company, which banked another £48.1million.

It means his fortune is set to overtake that of greats including Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards. And all of this in a year Ed took off.

Documents filed at Companies House reveal turnover of more than £70million and profits of £37million through Nathan Cable Touring.

It banked nearly £200,000 a day in the year ending March 31, 2020.

The figures follow the record-breaking Divide tour, which finished in Ed’s hometown of Ipswich in August 2019.

That became the highest-grossing music tour ever, grossing £607million over 255 shows.

Europe generated £58.9million, with £11.4million from Asia and £125,624 from North America.

His Ed Sheeran Ltd firm, which gets money from the writing, recording and production of his music, made a £29million profit on turnover of £48.1million.

Earlier this year Ed was reported to be one of the wealthiest music stars in the country, at £200million.

Ringo is thought to be worth £260million and Sir Keith around £270million, meaning Ed is likely to overtake them.

Shortly before the tour ended, Ed dropped No.6 Collaborations Project, which topped the album charts in several countries.

Last Christmas Eve, Ed told fans he was taking a break and quit social media — not for the first time. He resurfaced in September to announce the birth of daughter Lyra with wife Cherry.

And on Monday he made a surprise return to music with the single Afterglow.

I can’t wait to see what he has in store for 2021.

Sam's dating swipe at Zara

SAM Thompson is getting his own back on girlfriend Zara McDermott after she admitted cheating on him.

The Made In Chelsea regular is on dating website Raya, frequented by celebrity names including HRVY, Normal People’s Paul Mescal and 2016 Bake Off champ Candice Brown.

The revelation comes just days after Sam reportedly forgave the Love Islander and reunited with her, looking very cosy ever since on social media.

But he was spotted on the dating site as recently as this week and pals reckon Sam is going to see what’s out there.

His profile, in which Sam describes himself as a presenter, even uses a picture of him taken by Zara during a holiday to New York in January.

A mate said: “The ball is well and truly in Sam’s court after Zara begged him for forgiveness.

“He feels like he can use it to his advantage and is likely to have a bit of a flirt with other women.

“But it’s very unlikely to be anything more than that as he has forgiven Zara and feels committed to her now despite what she did.”

Zara admitted she had cheated on Sam with music boss Brahim Fouradi while appearing on The X Factor: Celebrity last year.

After that, I have to say I don’t blame him.

Now pro goes on rap year

PROFESSOR Green has confirmed he is preparing to release more music.

In an exclusive interview, the London rapper said he had spent 2020 working on new tunes he plans to get out in the next few weeks.

Pro said: “I am going to start releasing new music in the New Year. I was going to wait until I went back on tour but there is no indication when that will be.

“Everything I have done for the larger part of my career has been about bringing people together, but in this very strange time it is nigh on impossible.”

He has also been helping out with another project. Pro appeared on screen at schools via Zoom, along with YouTuber Joe Sugg and host Rachel Riley.

He surprised children with a “rap basics” lesson as part of Amazon and charity partner Magic Breakfast’s Very Important Breakfast Clubs to mark two million healthy breakfasts provided to children this year.

Pro added: “My industry has been hit hard. I have always tried to put a positive spin on anything negative.

“When will we have time to take stock and reassess like this ever again?”

That’s a very good way to look at it, Pro.

THIERRY Henry will go down as one of Arsenal’s greatest strikers – and he’s being called to return as manager by his pal Sharleen Spiteri.

The Texas frontwoman forged a friendship with the footballer in the Nineties and says she is eager to see him come back to the club, where he played from 1999 to 2007, as she hardly ever sees him now that he’s the manager of Montreal Impact in Canada.

She told me: “I would absolutely love him to come back and be the manager of Arsenal. That would be the best Christmas present ever.

“Just to have him back in the UK would be fantastic because then I’d get to see him. He’s my daughter’s godfather too, so she’d be happy with that.

“But when you look at the history of it, it’s like, how many Arsenal players have come back to be manager? You’ve got to weigh it up.”

Stranger things have happened . . .

Slim fit Macca

PAUL McCartney still has some of the iconic jackets from his days in The Beatles – and they even fit him.

In a Q&A on Reddit Macca, in the band when they split in 1970, said: “I’ve got a lot of old clothes that are in storage. I don’t really use them. I’ve got one or two jackets from the Sixties that amazingly still fit.”

Macca also revealed how long it takes him to create a song.

He added: “It depends. Sometimes it can be as little as two hours.

“Or, if you figure out the music first and not the words, it can be a lengthy process. It can be a month before you get words you’re happy with. So between two hours and a month.”

Eyre-ing things out

Race to Christmas No1

THE race for Christmas No1 is all but wrapped up for LadBaby, as even Ed Sheeran has congratulated him.

The YouTube sensation, real name is Mark Hoyle, has sold 128,000 copies of his single Don’t Stop Me Eatin’, outselling nearest rival Mariah Carey by almost 100,000. It will be his third festive chart-topper on the bounce.

And it hasn’t gone unnoticed by Ed, who I can reveal has privately messaged him to support the track, which is raising funds for foodbank charity The Trussell Trust.

Ed’s released his first tune in a year on Monday, Afterglow, which is yet to crack the Top 20 due to the onslaught of festive tracks.

A source said: “Ed messaged Mark to say he loves what they’re doing and has encouraged him and his family to keep releasing comedy tracks every year for good causes.

“He said he’s glad Mark has made Christmas No1s fun again after years of X Factor acts claiming the titles. It was a really sweet move and was lovely for Mark and his family.”

Marcus Rashford and Lewis Capaldi are among other big names who have thrown their support behind the track.

Three Christmas No1s will match the number set by The Beatles and Spice Girls.

It really will be a merry Christmas for him.

The Take That singer has recorded a special performance with the Concert Signers of his festive version of Incredible – called Incredible Christmas.

The group sign to music to raise awareness of deaf people and sign language at concerts and have performed on stage with artists including Jools Holland, Bryan Adams and Michael Buble.
