Camila Cabello’s upcoming Cinderella film will be a feminist retelling of the story to inspire young girls – The Sun

THERE has been plenty of criticism of Disney princesses over the years but bosses are hoping that the upcoming Cinderella remake will please even the most woke parents.

I’m told producers are putting a feminist spin on the classic tale and making the character, played by Camila Cabello, stronger and more independent in order to inspire young girls.

The change is even reflected in the soundtrack, as one of the most bonkers moments will see Missy Elliott delivering a rendition of Beyonce’s female empowerment anthem Single Ladies while dressed as a town crier.

That scene for the big-budget movie is believed to have been shot earlier this year in the UK, although lockdown restrictions mean the film is yet to be completed.

A movie insider said: “Disney bosses know it is vital Cinderella is not seen to be falling into old stereotypes.

“They want to make her an inspirational figure for young girls who are watching it, showing they can be strong and independent.

“It’s a message they are hammering home and one Camila was adamant about before she signed up.

“Camila is also involved in putting together the soundtrack, which will feature lots of powerful and aspirational female voices too.”

Keira Knightley previously said she was refusing to show her young daughter Edie certain Disney classics, including the 1950 animation of Cinderella.

She accused the character of being someone who “waits around for a rich guy to rescue her. Don’t! Rescue yourself. Obviously!”

The live-action Cinderella remake, due out in February, will also feature James Corden and Romesh Ranganathan as footmen, plus Minnie Driver as Queen Beatrice.

Billy Porter from US drama Pose will be a “genderless” Fairy Godmother.

Similar moves have been made in other Disney films in recent years, with Bo Peep transformed in Toy Story 4 from a pink-dress-wearing love interest to a key character who strides around in blue trousers.

If that’s the case here, Cinderella can wave goodbye to the ball- gown and glass slippers.

Justin pushes his luck

JUSTIN BIEBER’s common sense went out of the window as he headed off for a bike ride in Los Angeles.

The singer was pictured cycling down a road while barefoot and without a proper helmet – all while chatting on his mobile phone.

To add to his idiocy, Justin pulled down his face mask for the chat before pulling it back up around his face – rendering it almost pointless.

It’s the first time Justin has been spotted in public since he returned from Canada, where he spent early lockdown with wife Hailey.

JOSH HUTCHERSON has called his Hunger Games role a “double-edged sword”.

He said: “Doing big, big projects that make you even more well-known doesn’t sound as appetising. If that came up again, I’d have to think about it.”

Give us a thong, Leigh

LEIGH-ANNE PINNOCK mixes business with pleasure in this shirt-and-bikini combo.

The Little Mix singer showed off a lilac two-piece from her swimwear range during a photoshoot in her garden.

Leigh-Anne launched In’A’SeaShell with her best pal last year. And her hard work has paid off, with her bandmates and TV host Maya Jama all seen in the designer beachwear.

Leigh-Anne said of her range: “We worry about being beach body-ready but what is the perfect body?

"That is what our brand is about. Anyone can wear it and feel good in it.

Meanwhile, Leigh-Anne didn’t look too pleased with herself in another photo after hurting herself while exercising.
She wrote: “I went and crushed my little finger between two dumbbells.”

Drake on Kylie's bad side

DRAKE has apologised after mocking the Kardashians in an unreleased track that has emerged online.

In the track, which aired in an Instagram Live by two of Drake’s DJ pals, the rapper called Kylie Jenner a “side piece” – slang for the other woman in a love – triangle.

That is despite Drake being good pals with her boyfriend Travis Scott.

He also mocked Kylie’s big sister Kendall and supermodel Gigi Hadid, rapping: “Yeah, I got 20 damn Kendalls, young slim baddies and they in Vogue, yeah, I got 20 f***ing Gigis.”

In a statement on Thursday, Drake insisted the song – which he recorded in 2017 – was never meant to be heard by the public.

He said on Instagram: “A song that ran last night on Night Owl Sound live set shouldn’t have been played. It’s a song that leaked three years ago and got scrapped shortly after.

“Last thing I’d want to do is wake up having any friends of mine feeling disrespected, so I just had to say that to start the day.”

Luckily for Drake, lockdown makes any awkward face-to-face meetings unlikely for the time being.

Plait's nice, Alice

ONE of pop’s most promising performers, Alice Chater, has returned with emotional new ballad Two Of Us.

She posed for this striking photo on the set of the song’s video, which was filmed before lockdown and is out next week.

Her new tune was produced by MYKL, who has worked with Zayn Malik and Rita Ora.

And it’s the latest in a long line of brilliant tracks from the talented singer, who has racked up more than 42million streams.

Since shooting the video. Alice has enjoyed a more sedate life while in lockdown with her boyfriend in Sweden.

She said: “I’ve picked up some gardening skills. I’ve been sweeping leaves a lot.

“I’ve never been fishing before, either – but we didn’t catch any fish. I’ve also been trying to bake but it hasn’t been going too well.

"I haven’t mastered the white chocolate cake yet.“

Niall chafes at big 1D date

NIALL HORAN has revealed that One Direction had hoped to drop a previously unreleased single this summer . . . but failed to find anything good enough.

The band, who have been on hiatus since 2016, in July celebrate ten years since forming.

But Niall now doubts whether anything special will take place to mark the occasion.

He explained: “We have barely spoken about it. The band got together in July 2010, so it’s the ten-year anniversary coming up and we were chatting about, like, ‘Is there anything we can release? Content or something?’

“We came to the conclusion that there’s nothing.”

But in terms of staging a reunion with Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and even potentially Zayn Malik, he said: “For now, no.”

Niall, who released his second solo album, Heartbreak Weather, in March, said he had been focusing on his fitness instead of music during the lockdown.

However, it has resulted in him developing a sore crotch.

Speaking to an Aussie radio station, he said: “I bought a road bike. I didn’t realise you definitely need to get the Lycra pants.

“It’s been a rough couple of weeks since I got that bike. But I’ve done some serious cycling and I’m fitter now than I’ve ever been.”

LADY GAGA and Ariana Grande have shot to the top of the iTunes chart here and in the US with Rain On Me.

The high- intensity dance track is the second single from Gaga’s sixth studio album, Chromatica, due out next Friday.

Lewis back on top

CONGRATULATIONS to Lewis Capaldi after his debut album Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent went back to No 1 last night – a full year after its release.

The Scot’s record has spent a total of ten weeks in the top spot since last May, clocking up 900,000 sales to date.

In fact, it is the best-selling UK album of 2020 and is one of just 20 in chart history to have logged more than 52 consecutive weeks in the Top Ten.

But Lewis remains as down-to-earth as ever, spending lockdown with his parents in their modest semi in Whitburn, West Lothian.

He’s also found that fame has its downside. During a TikTok Live, Lewis said: “For 23 years of my life, no one has called me ginger. But as soon as I got famous, everyone kept bringing up the fact I was a f***ing redhead.

"But I am not. I’m not Ed Sheeran and no, I don’t have ginger hair. It’s brown.”

Katy's lockdown lows

KATY PERRY has said she is “spiralling” while pregnant in lockdown.

She said: “I know I should meditate. I know I should talk to my therapist.

"In the past I’ve been a perfectionist or control freak, and all perfectionist/control freaks are spiralling right now.

“And planners are spiralling. So I’m spiralling a little bit, like, every day.

“But I also chalk it up to the uncertainty of being pregnant for the first time and having a child and not knowing.

“Los Angeles just extended their stay- at-home until maybe August and I’m like, ‘OK, I’m going to trust the professionals’.”
