This was an unforgettable night at MSG
Trae Young is embracing his role as the Garden’s newest villain.
The Hawks point guard trolled heckling New York fans after his game-winning floater secured the Hawks’ 107-105 win over the Knicks on Sunday night. Throughout the first round playoffs matchup, Young was met with “f–k you, Trae” chants from the 15,000 fans at MSG.
“It got real quiet in there. They’re still yelling that, I don’t care. Next one, next one,” Young said waling back to the locker room, smiling, after stealing Game 1 — which marked his first career playoff game.
The Hawks posted the clip to their social media feeds. Later Sunday night, Young tweeted, “What they gonna say next? 1-0”
With 9.8 seconds left, the game was tied at 105 a piece. Young dribbled through the lane and sunk a game-winning floater to put the Hawks up two points.
As he made his way back up the court, with 0.9 seconds to go, Young looked out at the roaring MSG crowd and yelled: “It’s quiet as f–k in here.”
After the game, Young elaborated on the “exciting” moment.
“As I hit the floater, it just felt like everybody got quiet,” he recalled. “I was waiting for them F-you chants again. I was excited.”
Young added that he “must be doing something right” to receive so much hate from Knicks fans.
“I just got to let my play do the talking. At the end of the day, fans can only talk. They can’t guard me. They’re not out there playing,” Young said on his postgame Zoom call.
Young finished the game with 32 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.
“But I know the work’s not done yet. It’s just one game. Enjoy this win tonight for it being my first win, first game in the playoffs. But we gotta get back at it tomorrow,” he said.
Game 2 in the Knicks-Hawks first round playoff series will tip off on Wednesday at 7:30 PM ET at MSG.
