THERE is a cracking card at Pontefract to whet the appetite ahead of Royal Ascot.
The feature event is the Listed Pontefract Castle Fillies' Stakes (2.50) and our man Jack Keene has had a good look at the 12-strong field.
A Monday afternoon cracker can go the way of the classy ANTONIA DE VEGA.
She had some smart form last campaign, bolting up on her reappearance in Listed company before commendable efforts at Group 1 and 2 level.
She was doing all of her best work late when a close-up fourth in Germany on her final outing of the season, so she should relish the 1m4f at this stiff track.
The four-year-old boasts a 100% record first-time-out, she is clear on ratings and trainer Ralph Beckett is in red-hot form.
The one who poses the greatest threat is the progressive Specialise, who appreciated the step up to 1m4f at Newmarket in the autumn.
She has untapped potential over this sort of distance, though she will have to go some to lower the colours of the selection.
Eva Maria, who has the benefit of a run having finished fourth in the Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket, and Bighearted will also appreciate this stiffer test of stamina and have rock-solid place claims.
But it will be bitterly disappointing if Antonia De Vega can't kick her season off with a win.
