Man wins $344M Powerball jackpot after playing fortune cookie numbers

RALEIGH, N.C. — A North Carolina man who says he based his Powerball entry on a fortune cookie he got from his granddaughter now has a fortune to celebrate.

WRAL in Raleigh reports retired retailer Charles W. Jackson Jr. stepped forward at North Carolina Education Lottery headquarters on Tuesday to claim last weekend’s $344.6 million jackpot.

Jackson chose the $223 million lump sum payment and said he would donate some of it to several charities and give $1 million to his brother to make good on a deal they made.

Jackson initially thought he had won just $50,000 and was heading to Raleigh to collect, but looked again and saw he’d won a lot more.

“I said, ‘Dang, I got them all,’” he said at the news conference.

He also said he had to find the jackpot amount on Google because he doesn’t watch television news. Once he did, he told his wife, “You ain’t going to believe this — I got it all.”

Jackson said he hopes the windfall doesn’t change him.

He added, “I’m still going to wear my jeans — maybe newer ones.”

Jenelle Evans and Mom Barbara Involved in Spat Outside Courthouse – See the Videos

After some videos of the courthouse brawl surface online, the former ‘Teen Mom 2′ star admits that she feels like’ my relationship with my mom is destroyed at this point.’

AceShowbizJenelle Evans and her mother Barbara were caught on camera arguing outside of a North Carolina courthouse on Tuesday, June 4. The pair could be heard discussing her custody case in a nasty spat.

“I’m right here outside of the courthouse, I’m giving my daughter a hug. If you have a problem with it … then go get an officer,” Jenelle said to her mom in a video, which was obtained by TMZ, while holding her 2-year-old Ensley. “Because obviously she’s not scared.”

“I need to get her lunch,” Barbara, who currently has custody of Ensley and Jenelle and ex Andrew Lewis’ son Jace, argued, adding that they were limited on time. Barbara also said that Jenelle acted like this “only for the cameras.”

Jenelle, who earlier in the day gave the judge updates on her and husband David Eason‘s counseling and parenting classes, hit back, telling the paparazzi, “I’m happy I got this moment. [Barbara] blocked my number.” The 27-year-old reality TV star went on saying, “We’re not doing visitation today,” adding that “the new judge is kind of pissed off” at Barbara.

Things got ugly when the former “Teen Mom 2” star yelled at her mother and accused her brother Colin Evans of posting nude shots of Ensley online. “Your son is posting naked pictures of my daughter online,” Jenelle screamed at her mother. She also revealed that her mom had taken a “hair follicle” test and knew what was in her “system.”

The back and forth between the mom and daughter duo continued with Barbara dropping a drug bombshell as she revealed, “Jace is the one telling me you have white bags of stuff at your house.” Not going to let her mom win, Jenelle fired back by claiming that she called 911 on her mother because she “locked Ensley in a room.”

After the videos surfaced online, Jenelle admitted to Us Weekly, “I do feel like my relationship with my mom is destroyed at this point. This isn’s a way a mother should be treating her daughter. She fights so hard for my sister and my brother when they are the ones with major issues, not me.”

The tone for this illegal ad came from the top of DOE

It’s blatantly illegal under federal and state anti-discrimination law, but a job listing on Indeed.com sought only “teachers of color for the 2019-2020 school year” for work in Community School District 1. Sure sounds like the Carranza Department of Education.

Yes, the DOE denies direct responsibility for the post, which linked to a job fair invitation from Irene Sanchez, the principal at PS 15 Roberto Clemente. And her invite hinted in the same direction: “We are committed to diversifying our teaching staff.”

Chancellor Richard Carranza is too experienced to put out a “no whites (or Asians) need apply” sign. But he told the DOE brass to “get on board with my equity platform or leave” when he arrived last June.

Then he demoted top white officials, replacing them with blacks and some Hispanics. And some of those new aides spent millions on “implicit bias” training for educrats and teachers. Training that warns managers against “white supremacy culture” and reportedly instructs teachers to pay more attention to black students than to white ones.

Meanwhile, Carranza routinely charges that anyone opposing his plans for racial re-engineering of school admissions is “racist.”

In short, the new chancellor is setting an unmistakable tone, and it’s clearly filtering down. Bias and bigotry will rule the day as long as he’s in charge.

Holiday Inn Express worker’s classy response to racial slur goes viral

This Holiday Inn Express employee’s calm response to a guest who called him a racial slur has the internet cheering for him.

Craig Brooks, 26, recorded his encounter Sunday night with a woman at the chain in Austin, Texas, after hearing her call him the N-word over the phone, Business Insider reported.

In a viral video posted to Twitter, Brooks politely told the woman when she arrived that the hotel could no longer accommodate her.

“I need to stay here, my mother died,” the woman can be heard saying.

Brooks responded saying, “I understand that, but you called me a f–kin’ n—-r.”

When she coughs up an apology, Brooks doesn’t budge, telling her: “No, you weren’t sorry when you said it on the phone.”

Throughout the exchange, he repeatedly can be heard telling the woman, “It’s above me now.”

The line swiftly took off on social media as users, including the actress Gabrielle Union, hashtagged #ItsAboveMeNow to applaud Brooks’ handling of the situation.

“Whewwwww… When those consequences kicked IN… #ItsAboveMe …,” Union wrote in a tweet.

His video has since been viewed more than 9.5 million times on Twitter.

Brooks referred to his own response as a “classy clapback” and advised others who are confronted with racism to do the same.

“Being that I’m black in today’s society, we have to know how to deal with racism and combative white people, so we have to look at alternative ways to handle situations instead of being aggressive, because they already see us that way,” Brooks told Business Insider. “I look at it like it’s above me: You’re mad and I’m too good for that. That’s how I’m seeing it and how a lot of people are taking it.”

Major search for British hiker missing in New Zealand for five days

A major search and rescue operation is under way for a British hiker in New Zealand who has not been heard from for several days.

Darren Myers was traversing the Tararua Ranges on the North Island alone when he fell out of contact with his family.

The 49-year-old, who is from the UK but lives in Wellington, was reported missing after he failed to arrive at the end point on Saturday afternoon.

His brother-in-law, Duncan Styles, told local media outlet Stuff that Mr Myers was "really thorough" and enjoyed solo expeditions.

Rescuers are attempting to locate Mr Myers by land and air, although their efforts were hampered on Wednesday by wintry weather .

Search co-ordinator Anthony Harmer told local media outlet Stuff: "We have a missing male up in the Tararuas.

"We're primarily looking at the northern crossing area and we've got approximately 50 searchers out in the field.

"We're throwing all available resources into the right areas as we know from experience is the right thing to do.

"We're looking at other options also, including infrared resources later in the day."

Mr Styles said his brother-in-law's disappearance had been "very, very difficult" for their family.

"We're all still very upset by the whole thing. It's a very difficult process because there's no real end in sight and we've got a grave sense of loss," he said.

Elton John got a birthday gift from ‘Rocketman’ star Taron Egerton

Get an eyeful of this.

Of all the over-the-top costumes that Taron Egerton rocked as Elton John in the new movie musical “Rocketman,” which opened Friday, there was one item that the actor kept to give as a special gift.

“I kept the glasses from ‘Your Song,’ ” says the 29-year-old actor of the spectacles that he wears during the scene when John writes the music to Bernie Taupin’s lyrics for the 1970 hit.

“But what I actually did with them was that I got Elton’s reading prescription and I put it in those glasses, and I gave them to him for his 72nd birthday earlier this year,” he tells The Post.

John is known for his wildly creative eyewear collection; this Pinterest board is just one indication.

As for the getups Egerton donned to play the pop superstar — which run the gamut from a multicolored chicken suit to a sequined Los Angeles Dodgers uniform — one proved to be particularly challenging.

“When I’m onstage in Australia dressed as Queen Elizabeth I, just getting onto the [piano] stool with all of that fabric and all those skirts was quite a challenge in itself,” Egerton says. “But there’s some comedy born of that, there’s some reality to who Elton is with all of that.”

Reflecting on how long it took him to get into each outfit, Egerton adds, “I don’t think it’s any secret that Elton was never particularly concerned with the practicality of his costumes.”

Egerton and John bonded during filming.

“He told me very early on that he didn’t want me to try and sound like him,” says Egerton of John, who served as an executive producer of the film based on his life. “He wanted me to make the songs my own. He wanted me to be creative with them rather than just copying him.”

Accused Russian temptress takes plea deal in separate robbery case

The Russian “masseuse” accused of trying to murder a Queens woman with poisoned cheesecake so she could assume her identity copped to a sweetheart deal in a separate Brooklyn robbery case Tuesday — admitting only to a single misdemeanor charge in exchange for 90 days in jail.

Viktoriya Nasyrova pleaded guilty to a single count of attempted petit larceny before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice William Harrington and was immediately sentenced to time served.

Prosecutors originally accused the 44-year-old of drugging and robbing men she’d ensnared on dating apps, but Nasyrova was not required Tuesday to explain her crimes.

She simply mumbled “yes” when asked by the judge if she was guilty of the June 2016 larceny rap.

Nasyrova remains jailed on attempted murder charges in Queens for trying to feed a lookalike cheesecake laced with the deadly tranquilizer phenazepam in order to steal her identity.

She’s also a suspected of murdering a 54-year-old woman in her native Russia in a similar identity theft scheme.

Defense attorney Martha Saunders declined to comment on her client’s behalf.
