Geert Wilders is blocked from Twitter after branding D-66 ‘suckers’

Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders is blocked from Twitter after branding opposition party D-66 ‘suckers… who import ever more Islam’

  • He has 811,000 followers – second to PM Mark Rutte among Dutch politicians
  • He called D-66 ‘suckers …who import ever more Islam and then weep crocodile tears over the consequences, such as honour killings’

Dutch far-right politician and anti-Islam campaigner Geert Wilders said Twitter has temporarily blocked his account following remarks he made about a political rival.

Wilders, who faces threats against him by Islamists, relies heavily on Twitter to communicate with his supporters.

He has 811,000 followers, second only to Prime Minister Mark Rutte among Dutch politicians.

Geert Wilders (pictured) said Twitter has temporarily blocked his account following remarks he made about a political rival

He said in a statement today: ‘Twitter often tolerates death threats against me, but not a factual tweet by me about a colleague. Madness!’

Twitter could not immediately be reached for comment.

A spokesman for Wilders’ Freedom Party sent a screenshot of his account showing the ban, which was due to expire in about eight hours.

The tweet that led to Wilders’ block referred to D-66, a progressive centre-left party as ‘suckers …who import ever more Islam and then weep crocodile tears over the consequences, such as honour killings’.

Wilders is currently appealing a 2016 conviction for inciting discrimination for an incident in which he led followers in chanting they wanted ‘fewer! fewer! fewer’ Moroccans in the Netherlands.

How did Geert Wilders raise tensions in Holland after launching a cartoon competition for people to submit drawings of the prophet Muhammad?

Tensions in the Netherlands rose dramatically last year after far-tight politician Geert Wilders launched a cartoon competition for people to submit drawings of the prophet Muhammad.

Mr Wilders reacted angrily when Hardi N, an Iraqi-born jihadi alleged to be the ring-leader of the foiled plot, was freed in 2014 on his return to Holland from Syria and was set free by the Dutch courts.

Judges allowed the suspected jihadi to walk the streets and be monitored with an electronic tag.

In August last year, a 19-year-old Afghan with a German residence permit stabbed and injured two American tourists at Amsterdam’s busy Central Station before being shot.

The Dutch prosecutor said he had chosen the Netherlands for the attack believing Islam to be ‘frequently insulted’ in the country.

The Amsterdam attack came after a Taliban call for attacks on Dutch troops after Mr Wilders organised the Prophet Muhammed cartoon competition as many Muslims consider images of the prophet to be blasphemous.

The likelihood of a terror attack in the Netherlands ‘remained substantial’, the Dutch anti-terror agency NCTV said at the time, with terror threat levels then at level four out of five.

The day before the attack on August 31, Mr Wilders cancelled the competition following death threats and large-scale protests in Pakistan.

Terror-related arrests in September came three months after two men were arrested in Rotterdam on suspicion of preparing attacks in France and in the Netherlands.

Prosecutors said earlier they were ‘close’ to launching their attack but there had been no mention of what the target in France might have been.

In the Netherlands the pair arrested in July are said to have staked out and ‘identified several possible targets’ in Rotterdam, including ‘a police station and the Erasmus Bridge’, the country’s second largest.

He was acquitted of hate-speech in a closely watched trial in 2016 but convicted after the judges said in their verdict: ‘The inflammatory character of the way in which the statements were made have incited others to discriminate people of Moroccan origin.’

But they added that there was ‘insufficient evidence’ that his words at an election rally in 2014 amounted to incitement to hatred.

Wilders is currently appealing a 2016 conviction for inciting discrimination

The judges also dismissed the prosecution’s request to impose a 5,000 euro fine on the far-right MP.

‘In this case, the most important question is whether Wilders has crossed a line. This judgement has answered that question,’ the judges said in their verdict.

‘Therewith, the chamber finds that justice has been done. Consequently, no punishment is imposed.’

At the time, Wilders used his favoured tool Twitter to react, tweeting a number of responses to the verdict as well as posting personal message on his YouTube account.

Wilders made it clear immediately that he intended to appeal his conviction, as he believed it was ‘a big loss for freedom of speech’.

Wilders, who was not present at the trial, commented on the character of the judges who delivered his verdict in 2016

Just before the verdict in 2016, Wilders tweeted that he would ‘continue to speak the truth about the Moroccan problem’

North Korea executes top diplomat after failure of Donald Trump summit

North Korea executed its special envoy to the United States following the collapse of the second summit between leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump, according to reports.

A South Korean newspaper said Kim Hyok Chol, who laid the groundwork for the Hanoi meeting and accompanied Kim on his private train, was executed by firing squad for ‘betraying the supreme leader’ after he was turned by the US.

‘Kim Hyok Chol was executed in March at Mirim Airport along with four senior foreign ministry officials following an investigation,’ the publication said quoting unidentified sources.

Kim Hyok Chol was the North’s counterpart of US special representative Stephen Biegun in the run-up to the Hanoi summit in February.

South Korea’s Unification Ministry, which handles inter-Korean relations, declined to comment on the report.

The newspaper, Chosun Ilbo, also said Kim Jong Un’s interpreter Shin Hye Yong was sent to a prison camp for a mistake at the summit.

She failed to translate Kim’s new proposal when Trump declared ‘no deal’ and walked away from the table, it was also reported.

Kim Jong Un and Trump left the Vietnamese capital without a deal after they failed to reach agreement on rolling back Pyongyang’s nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief.

The North has since sought to raise the pressure and carried out two short-range missile tests in May.

Senior party official Kim Yong Chol, the North’s counterpart to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in nuclear talks, was also sent to a labour camp, the paper said.

In April, South Korea’s parliamentary intelligence committee said Kim Yong Chol had been censured over his handling of the Hanoi summit, despite the fact he had recently been named a member of the State Affairs Commission, a supreme governing body chaired by Kim Jong Un.

News of the reported purge came as North Korea’s official Rodong Sinmun newspaper, mouthpiece of the ruling party, warned that officials who committed anti-party or anti-revolutionary acts would face the ‘stern judgement of the revolution’.

Alesha Dixon shouts ‘my dress is off’ in BGT wardrobe malfunction

Alesha Dixon very nearly suffered a wardrobe malfunction on Britain's Got Talent as she could be heard screaming "my dress is off" as the show began.

In Thursday night's semi-finals the BGT judge was gearing up to arrive on the stage after an introduction by hosts Ant and Dec when the panic set in.

Just seconds later as Alesha took her seat alongside fellow judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and David Walliams , they mentioned her "wardrobe malfunction".

Ant and Dec asked the foursome if they were ready for tonight's performances when David joked that Alesha's dress nearly came off.

A pregnant Alesha giggled as she nodded that she'd suffered a problem with her pink sparkly look that showed off her baby bump .

Alesha, who revealed she was expecting her second child with her husband on the first live semi-final via Ant and Dec's opening song, looked incredible in the pink number.

But just moments before it seems as though she nearly didn't make it to the stage alongside an equally glamorous Amanda.

The 40-year-old has won over fans all week with her stylish look, wearing an array of sparkly numbers.

They’ve also been loving the fact the judge has been displaying her blossoming baby bump in each outfit, after confirming her pregnancy on Monday.

The expecting mum, who has five-year-old daughter, Azura, with partner Azuka Ononye, stood up to reveal her bump during Monday’s semi-final.

On Thursday, Alesha went for sparkles once again, this time in a metallic pink number.

Opting for another short, mini dress instead of a floor-length gown, Alesha's frock was covered in sparkling bright pink sequins.

She also kept up with the winged sleeved, while completing the look with a pair of silver heels.

On Wednesday, she shook things up with a silver sparkly number.

The long-sleeved gown featured a plunging neck line, while it was covered in silver sequins in its entirety.

Alesha showcased her gorgeous pins, while completing the look with matching silver heels.

Britain’s Got Talent airs live all this week on ITV at 7:30pm.

De Blasio’s bail-reform bid for ‘woke’ cred puts you at risk

Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced a plan to triple the number of teen defendants released without bail in a move likely aimed at one-upping his archrival, Gov. Cuomo, who has also been busy “reforming” the bail process.

Hizzoner’s latest brainstorm could prove especially dangerous. He hopes to achieve his goal by expanding the scope of eligibility for a supervised-release program reserved for defendants between the ages of 16 and 19. Soon, even those charged with first- and second-degree robbery, assault and burglary will qualify for the city’s Youth Engagement Track — that is, bail-free release from custody while their cases are pending.

Teenage robbers, violent assailants and burglars aren’t a low-risk population, and there will likely be a price tag attached to a policy of leniency when it comes to handling such cases. So why is the mayor pulling this lever now? The answer is twofold.

First, de Blasio’s plan to close Rikers Island calls for reducing the city’s jail population to 5,000 inmates. In a column last year, I posited that this goal couldn’t be achieved without putting more serious and violent offenders on the street.

Though the city has drastically reduced its jail population over the years — it was more than 17,000 in 1998 and cut down to about 8,800 by last summer — it seems that we have run out of “lower-level” offenders to release or divert from detention. This isn’t just my assessment. The de Blasio administration has been essentially saying as much since 2017.

As I’ve noted in these pages, New York’s jail violence has been rising. Despite the population being essentially cut in half since 1998, violence among inmates has nearly doubled.

Asked for explanation, de Blasio & Co.’s standard excuse has been that “successful efforts to divert low-risk, nonviolent offenders,” have left behind a population of inmates who “tend to be more violent and difficult to manage,” as the 2017 Mayor’s Management Report put it.

That’s not all. Per the same report, “young adults . . . have historically been involved in disproportionately more violent incidents” in Big Apple jails. But never you mind.

Further highlighting the incapacitation benefits of pretrial detention for violent criminals is a Bureau of Justice Statistics study showing that, between 1990 and 2002, 12 percent of violent felons convicted in America’s largest urban counties committed their offense while “on release pending disposition of a prior case.”

Even so, de Blasio is plowing ahead with a policy that will help get the jail population down to where he says it needs to be. After all, the “woke” left would see closing Rikers as a major victory — a win that might come in handy for a mayor looking to stand out in a crowded Democratic primary field.

Which brings us to the second answer to the question of why he is moving forward with this policy.

Many on the Democratic Left (and, increasingly, some on the Republican Right) subscribe to the view that the criminal-justice system is racist and overly punitive. As a result, many 2020 Democratic presidential candidates have taken up this issue as a way to establish their “progressive” bona fides and to call their opponents’ social-justice credentials into question.

De Blasio may very well be using his authority to enact “reforms” to the same end.

Supporters of de Blasio’s teen initiative will be quick to point out that judges will retain their discretion to decide whether the more serious teenage offenders will be diverted from pretrial detainment.

But as The Post reported this week, many judges “fear they will have to adopt de Blasio’s new, more lenient standards or risk losing their jobs.” And let’s not forget that there are a number of city judges who welcome any opportunity to go soft on such offenders with open arms.

The most prominent of the mayor’s prior reforms aimed at younger offenders has been his decision to take punitive segregation — better known as solitary confinement — off the table for jail inmates under 21.

That policy led to more violence committed by younger inmates, which has driven much of the increase in the city’s overall jail violence. Despite acknowledging that “higher rates of fights” were in part “a result of reducing and eventually eliminating punitive segregation,” the mayor has stayed that course in the name of “equity,” and is going further down that road in pursuit of the same with his bail plan.

Rafael Mangual is a fellow and deputy director of legal policy at the Manhattan Institute.
