THE usual crop of summer jobs has wilted due to the coronavirus crisis.
With festivals, seaside resorts and some top attractions still closed, opportunities are limited. But if you are willing to try something new, there are roles out there.
The Government’s Job Help website has seen a surge in unusual summer jobs up for grabs.
Steve McCall of Newcastle City Jobcentre says: “Some might not be the usual opportunities you expect or in your dream sector but there are options out there for everyone. View them as stepping stones.”
Minister for Employment Mims Davies MP added: “We’re helping people build their skills and experience by highlighting job opportunities which are still available over the summer months.
“And our nationwide network of work coaches are continuing to match jobseekers with employers recruiting in their local area.”
Here are the top five alternative summer jobs and how to land one:
LANDSCAPE GARDENER: There are currently 5,000-plus vacancies and many do not require experience. Pay ranges from minimum wage to £25,000 for an experienced gardener.
PIZZA CHEF: Pizza delivery hit record highs during lockdown. There are 2,850 pizza jobs including chefs and delivery drivers.
NURSERY ASSISTANT: These usually start on minimum wage but you can train towards professional qualifications and work your way up to management. There are currently almost 900 jobs on offer.
FRUIT PICKING: The Pick For Britain campaign saw thousands of furloughed workers take to the fields but more summer staff are needed. See pickforbritain.org.uk to sign up.
BUTCHER: Recruiters such as Staffline are taking on new starters as butchers and food processors. There are 300-plus jobs up for grabs.

HEADHUNTERS love LinkedIn for finding candidates online.
Kirill Bigai, CEO of online tutor site Preply, says: “When recruiters are inundated with enquiries from candidates, it’s important to stand out from the crowd.”
Here is how to get noticed.
- Do your research. Recruiters and employers take notice of candidates who show they put in the time to learn.
- Check your subscription. The free version of LinkedIn only lets you message people you are already connected to, or connections of connections. To message new recruiters, you need the Premium version. If you are new to LinkedIn, you might be eligible for a free trial.
- Message the right person. It can be hard to tell who makes the hiring decisions. The most common titles are: Head of Talent; Recruiter; Director of People & Talent, Human Resources; HR Manager; Hiring Manager; Recruitment Manager.
- Try an independent recruiter. If you are struggling to get a response, an independent recruiter can help you find roles that match your profile across lots of different firms.
- Get your style right. Your message should be short and to the point, with a professional title. Don’t include too much detail about yourself. Put this in your profile instead.
