Tesco makes change to delivery slots amid plea for shoppers to ‘think before you click’

Tesco has announced a change to delivery slots as it struggled to keep up with the growing demand. The coronavirus (COVID-19) has caused many to switch to online shopping in a bid to cut back on how often they go outside.

The government has introduced increasingly strict rules for those in the UK, with Britons being urged to stay home.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked people to shop online and use food delivery services where possible.

While many people will have jumped online to do their weekly shop, the supermarket has struggled to keep up with the growing demand.

This has also meant those trying to place orders have been stuck in long cyber queues and struggling to find a delivery slot.

To keep up with the demand, Tesco announced it will expand it’s home delivery capacity.

Those shopping online can pick from one of 780,000 delivery and click and collect spots that have been opened up this week.

This is a massive increase from the 120,000 slots that were available two weeks ago.

As demand continues to grow, Tesco are also set to increase this by another 100,000 slots.

The supermarket giant has explained this is possible after the addition of 200 new vans, 2,500 drivers and 5,000 store pickers.

The change will now make it easier for Britons who have struggled to find themselves a time slot.

However, Tesco has issued a plea for those hoping to grab one of the many new slots.

After the announcement was made, the supermarket chain posted on Twitter to ask customers to think before using the service.

A post read: “With many of our more vulnerable customers unable to make it in-store right now, we’re asking everyone to ‘think before you click’ and shop in-store if you can.

“Because now more than ever, #EveryLittleHelps.”

An accompanying video said: “Shop in-store, if you can, to save deliveries and Click+Collect for those who need them most.”

The retailer explained the increase in delivery slots is primarily to help vulnerable and elderly people.

The company also urged those who are able to shop in-store to do so for themselves and for any vulnerable friends, family and neighbours.

Tesco has placed an item limit on the number of items that can be added to an online basket.

A statement posted last week read: “We’ll be capping the number of items you can add to your online basket to 80.

“This means that if you make a change to an existing tesco.com order or place a new order, you’ll only be able to order a maximum of 80 items.

“To help give everyone access to the essentials, every product will still be limited to a maximum of three per customer.”
