Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward got married after dating for six years. Tonight in the Channel 5 documentary Edward & Sophie: The Reluctant Royals?, royal experts explained how their importance in the Royal Family has grown.
Sophie and Prince Edward began dating in 1993 after meeting at an event.
At the time, Sophie was enjoying a successful career in public relations.
In the documentary Edward & Sophie: The Reluctant Royals?, experts explained why they were considered to be an unusual pairing.
“Sophie and Edward’s relationship was an unlikely one, they grew up worlds apart,” the narrator said.
“They couldn’t have had a more different upbringing,” Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke added.
“His mother is the Queen of England and he grew up with that and being in the limelight all his life.
“This compared to Sophie who never thought in a million years she would be marrying into the Royal Family. Sophie Rhys Jones had a very normal upbringing.”
The Wessexes tried to keep a low-profile relationship before announcing their engagement in January 1999.
Just five months later, they tied the knot at a ceremony which took place at Windsor Castle.
Despite growing up away from the limelight, Sophie soon took on a role as a working royal.
The Countess is believed to have a good relationship with the Queen and be one of her closest allies.
This could be down to the way Sophie has handled her role in the Royal Family.
Julie continued: “The Queen does not like royal members to attract attention. So with Sophie, she saw she’s definitely not attracting as much attention as other members of the Royal Family and I think the Queen really liked that.”
Over the years, Sophie and Prince Edward’s roles in the Royal Family seem to have increased.
“In the year following the death of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, in March 2002, the amount of royal duties taken on by the Wessexes almost doubled,” the narrator explained.
“Their royal commitments have increased over the last two decades.”
Not only do they support the monarch, Sophie and Prince Edward champion many charities of their own.
Speaking on her charity work, a royal expert explained Sophie’s importance.
They said: “One senior staff told me how invaluable Sophie’s work has been.”
