During his first address to the United Kingdom as monarch on Friday 9 September,King Charles reflected on how the death of Queen Elizabeth II would change the royal family.
After becoming King immediately upon the death of his beloved mother, 73 year old Charles had to give up a number of his titles including that of the Prince of Wales, which he was given when he was just nine years old.
Instead,he announced that the title would now be given to his eldest son,Prince William, and his wifeKate Middleton.
Speaking from the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace, he said: “As my Heir, William now assumes the Scottish titles which have meant so much to me. He succeeds me as Duke of Cornwall.”
He added: “Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I have been so greatly privileged to bear during so much of my life and duty.”
In his address, King Charles also expressed his love forPrince Harry andMeghan Markle following their decision to step back as working royals back in 2020.
But besides being the father of 40 year old William and 38 year old Harry, Charles is the stepfather toQueen Consort Camilla ’s two children,Tom Parker Bowles and Laura Lopes.
However, despite their mother now being Queen Consort, Tom, 47, and Laura, 44, will not receive any royal titles because Camilla is royal by marriage rather than blood.
According to royal protocol, titles are passed on via birth or marriage, meaning that Tom and Laura, whose father is Andrew Parker Bowles, aren’t entitled to receive a title or expected to take on any royal duties.
While they may not be members of the royal family, food writer Tom and art curator Laura have shown their support for the royals andrecently attended the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II with their young families.
Elsewhere, as part of the changes, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s children Archie and Lilibet will be entitled to use HRH titles according to royal protocol, making them prince and princess.
However, one expert has claimed that the little ones will not take on these titles.
Speaking on Australian morning show Sunrise, political editor Samantha Maiden said: “I understand that they get this automatically when they're the grandchild of the monarch which they clearly are but quite pointedly, King Charles has not referenced this in his public statements.
“He's referred to them as master and so that suggests they're not going to get it. It's just another thing where you can sort of understand why these families are estranged.”
