Instagram couple beg for £9k holiday as mum funds their lifestyle with two jobs

An Instagram couple whose carefree lifestyle has been funded by one of their hardworking mums are now begging the public for financial backing for a "celebration of life" holiay.

Catalin Onc and his wife Elena Engelhardt chronicle the trips they take on their aspirational Instagram page another_beautiful_day .

Since setting it up in 2017 they have amassed 34,000 followers with photos of their trips to Indonesia, France, Italy and New Zealand.

Plans for the German couple's next adventure have caused a stir however.

Catalin and Elena want to cycle on a tandem bike from their home country to Africa in July.

Because neither of them have a job – instead relying on Catalin's mother to fund their lifestyle by working two jobs – they have turned to the public for financial support.

On a GoFundMe page they have set their sights high, asking for €10,000 (£8,907) to embark on the trip.

According to Catalin and Elena the adventure is worthy of external funding because of the positive impact it would have on their Instagram followers.

"We could write a long text about mental health or global warming," they explain on the fundraising page.

"We could tell you about following your dreams, or how important stepping out of your comfort zone is.

"We could tell you how beautiful traveling is, and it’s benefits, or the fact that most news don’t match reality.

"But we’re going to show you! Less talking more action."

While the pair are undeniably busy when it comes to going on holidays and posting photos on social media, their activeness seems questionable when it comes to the job market.

They have said getting a job would be "detrimental" to their lifestyle.

"Some will just tell us to get jobs, like everyone else and stop begging. But when you have the impact we do on others' life, getting a job is not an option," they wrote.

"We could model and make fast money, but we don't want to advertise consumerism. A normal job at this point would be detrimental."

So far they have raised €200 (£178) through six donors for their "huge adventure".

They have also stirred up a huge amount of resentment amongst those who object to their unusual means of money making.

One woman wrote on the page: "Heres an idea – how about you get jobs (like the rest of us) and fund it yourselves? You could even gift some of the money you make to those less fortunate than you.."

Another added: "Allowing your mother to work two jobs so you don't have to work one? How do you sleep?

"How do you move under that mountain of shame. Some people use this platform for life saving reasons, you could be taking money from someone who needs it to live through to next week.

"This is vapid, fake and everything wrong with the world."

The couple's rise to moderate internet stardom is possibly due to their striking appearances.

Catalin is heavily tattooed, with English phrases including 'Freedom', 'I Love Life' and 'Look within' scrawled over drawings of an angel and a crown.

By contrast Elena is largely tattoo free.

Following on from a torrid day online on which thousands of people left comments critical of the couple, Catalin posted a close up photo of his eye with the caption: "LOOK WITHIN.

"And with this post, I will step away from social media for a little while. I mentioned that I'll be doing the hardest thing I've ever done mentally and physically, soon.

"Here it is. I am going on a walk. I will walk as long as I possibly can.

"No sleep, No social media, No distractions. Just me and my brain out there.

"This first came to my mind in the Himalayan mountains, where I got to experience what my mind, body and soul are capable of.

"Now I'm going to take it even further.  I am ready to face whatever is buried deep inside me.

"Those doing the 30 day challenge, carry on. Remember why you started and keep moving forward. Much love to you all. Time to do some soul work."
