Doctor warns that burning candles could be bad for your health

Whether we use them to help us relax or to simply fill our homes with nice scents, most of us use scented candles at least once in a while.

They make the perfect addition to any relaxing bath, and they easily create ambience in our living rooms, all the while adding to our home decor.

However, it's recently been revealed that scented candles could actually be damaging our health – especially when overused.

Dr Dan Gubler, a PhD organic chemist and former professor, regularly shares health tips and advice on TikTok, and in his most recent video, he has outlined the risks that candles pose.

Holding up a white scented candle, he kicked off his video by saying: "There have been a lot of clinical studies that have come out recently that show that frequently burning indoor candles can cause serious health problems.

"Including inhibiting the ability of cells especially in the bladder to grow normally.

"When we think of pollution we think of it as an outdoor thing but indoor pollution caused by burning candles, air fresheners and other sources in a big problem."

Dr Dan went on the explain more about the problem with candles, adding: "Candles are made out of cheap paraffin wax, they’re made out of artificial fragrances and dyes and when we burn that it gives off carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide Benzopyrene, and other volatile compounds.

“They’re not good for the body, they interfere with the body’s ability to reproduce.”

The TikTok star then told how there is no "quality control" with these types of candles, as candle manufacturers are not required to, and they don't, "show over 90% of their ingredients" or have to prove safety.

He finished off by adding: "Be careful if you’re burning candles once in a while in a well ventilated space I wouldn’t worry about it but chronically burning could be a big deal."

His video reached over one million people on the popular app, and many were quick to comment on his advice.

One person wrote: "Can I have anything nice?"

Another jokingly added: "You can pry my Bath and Body works out of my cold dead hands."

It's safe to say many TikTok users weren't impressed, with a third person commenting: "CANDLES ARE MY MAIN SOURCE OF JOY WHAT DO I HAVE LEFT."
