Tyson Fury has praised his and wife Paris' newborn daughter Athena following her stay in the intensive care unit last month.

The pair's little girl was born with health complications and was placed on a ventilator before finally being discharged and allowed to go home.

And the professional boxer has now opened up about the stress he faced while his sixth child fought for her life, admitting that it added "years to his life".

Speaking candidly to ITV, the 33 year old said: "[It] probably took a couple of years off my life, the amount of stress I was under."

He continued: "But it's a part of life, I suppose. And, you know, there's going to be ups and downs in our lives, and it's about not giving up and always believing that you're going to get the best out of it.

"For all the people out there that have got kids in hospital, then you've got to be optimistic and be strong for your partner or whoever you're with, and things will get better eventually."

Tyson continued: "You're just praying, just hoping that things are going to be OK. And you're hoping for better times, and that's all you can do at that moment."

The athlete concluded the interview by noting that Athena was a "little fighter… just like me".

It has been three weeks since Tyson shared the happy news that his baby daughter Athena was finally out of the intensive care unit and "on the mend".

"On the mend. Should be going home soon," the heavyweight champion said.

"Thank you to God, thank you to all the doctors and nurses who've helped her," Tyson praised, clearly incredibly relieved his sixth child will soon be able to go back home with her mum and dad.

Tyson and Paris, who have been married since 2009, welcomed little Athena to their brood on Sunday, August 8.

The couple already share children Venezuela, 11, Prince John, nine, Prince Tyson II, four, Valencia, three, and Prince Adonis, two.
