Kerry Katona has recalled the tough Christmases she faced as a child and how she ended up eating corned beef in a refuge.

The mum-of-five says the experience now means she always goes “above and beyond” for her five kids to make up for the hard festive periods she herself faced as a youngster.

Opening up about spoiling her kids for Christmas, Kerry told OK! magazine: “I always remember being in a refuge with my mum and we’d just got re-homed. I was only nine.”

She continued: “The people from the refuge knocked on the door on Christmas Day with a bin bag of second-hand toys. We got a can of corned beef and some baked beans and I was really grateful.

“That’s why I like to go above and beyond for the kids – because I like to give them the Christmases I never had.”

Kerry also opened up about how her Christmas Day will pan out this year.

“I’m normally the first one up and then the kids will come down and each have their own pile of presents to open,” she said.

“They’re not allowed to open them until I’ve got a bin bag in my hand for all the wrapping paper.

“We’ll open a bottle of champagne and have a glass in the morning and then we’ll get the dinner going while the kids are playing with their toys. It’ll be lovely.”

As well as three of her five children – Heidi, 13, Max, 12, and Dylan-Jorge, six – Kerry will also be spending the big day with her fiancé Ryan Mahoney.

Kerry’s daughters with former husband Brian McFadden – Lilly-Sue, 17, and Molly, 19 – will be in Ireland with their grandparents.

Next year will mark a special time for the family, as the former Atomic Kitten star says she and Ryan have their hearts set on marrying in Las Vegas with her five kids by their side.

Of her nuptials, the singer explains of her plans: “I want to go to Vegas, so we don’t need to plan.

“Neither of us want a wedding, we want a marriage. It’ll just be me, Ryan and the kids.”

But Kerry says that the loved-up pair are not in a rush to walk down the aisle.

Kerry adds of when they will tie the knot: “We don’t know yet. We’re in no rush. It’ll probably be next summer.”

Kerry and Ryan have been dating for the last two years and the health and nutrition expert popped the question in Spain back in August.
