Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara 'welcome a baby boy named River'

Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara have welcomed a baby son named River, according to a close friend.

The happy news was revealed on stage at the Zurich Film Festival by director Viktor Kossakovsky, who was promoting his new movie Gunda, on which Joaquin is an executive producer.

Apologising for the actor’s absence, Kossakovsky said: ‘He just got a baby, by the way, his name was… a beautiful son called River, so he cannot promote it now.’

The name is a beautiful tribute to Joaquin’s brother, Stand By Me actor River Phoenix, who tragically died at the age of 23 back in 1993.

Neither Rooney or Joaquin have confirmed the news publicly, and had previously refused to comment on the pregnancy as they keep their lives away from the spotlight.

This is the couple’s first child together, with the pair getting together after starring together in 2018 film, Mary Magdalene.

They originally met on the set of film Her in 2013, but only became a couple after reuniting for their second movie.

Confirming their engagement in May 2019, the couple have been spending quarantine, and therefore most of the pregnancy, in their California home.

Metro.co.uk has reached out to reps for further comment and confirmation.
