Coronation Street is hit with 59 Ofcom complaints over its ‘discriminative’ scene where Sarah Platt called Adam Barlow a ‘smug Scottish g*t’

Coronation Street has been hit with 59 Ofcom complaints over a ‘discriminative’ scene involving Sarah Platt and Adam Barlow.

In an episode aired on the 11 November, it saw Sarah, played by Tina O’Brien, 37, call Adam, played by Sam Robertson, 35, a ‘smug Scottish g*t’.

The argument occurred after Adam tried to make Sarah jealous by asking out one of her co-workers Alina Pop.

Confronting him on the cobbles, Sarah shouted: ‘You think you’re so clever! You’re not. You’re a stupid, smug Scottish g*t!’  

An Ofcom spokesperson told The Sun that they had received 59 complaints over a ‘discriminative comment’ made by Sarah Platt. 

Taking to Twitter after the scenes aired, fans were left furious over the remark as they questioned why the word ‘Scottish’ was being used as an insult.

One person said: ‘Well, that was nice on Coronation Street – ”You’re just a Scottish g*t”.’

A different account noted: ‘Is it me, or do people chuck in the word “Scottish” a lot when they’re mad at Adam like it’s an insult all by itself? Can we just, like, not do that any more…? #Corrie #coronationstreet.’

Another viewer said: ‘Smug Scottish g*t!! Disgusting @Coronationstreet #coronationstreet.’  

While a different soap watcher added: ‘Top marks to Jane Danson on her heartbreaking performance tonight BUT was there any need for the ‘Scottish G*t’ outburst from Sarah? #coronationStreet.’
