10 Lip Oils For Anyone Who's Sick of Dealing With Sticky Gloss

Frosted eyeshadow, thin brows, and zig zag parts are trending again, so as far as beauty trends go, 2022 looks a lot like 2002. But while the looks you loved from the early aughts are back, the products used to create them have thankfully evolved. Case in point: lip gloss.

In this day and age, you don't have to deal with the same stickiness of the goopy lip gloss you kept in your back pocket throughout high school. Now, lip oils offer the same hydrating shine as a gloss — minus the stickiness.

"A lip oil is going to deliver long lasting hydrating benefits while giving a shiny, hydrating finish to the lips. It's a more holistic approach to having a shiny or glossy lip since they're typically formulated with nourishing oils like avocado oil, jojoba seed, squalene and so on," says celebrity makeup artist Neil Scibelli. "A standard gloss formula may have a bit more of a synthetic base to them to give them that thicker, glossier finish."

Lip oils are effortless to apply and blend (a single swipe and you're good to go), but they can also be layered with other lip products to minimize the effects of dryness. "Lip oils work great as a lip primer especially on dry lips," Scibelli shares. "So you can always apply a bit before your long-lasting color to hydrate and prep the lips. You can also apply it over your long-lasting color as a shine topper or for a hydrating finish." Just make sure the first lip product you apply is fully dry and set so the layers don't smear.

So if you're ready to wear a shiny lip color without dealing with your hair getting stuck to your lips, we've rounded up the 10 best lip oils to try, from a bold red that's just as pigmented as a matte lipstick to a universal nude that enhances your natural lip color.
